Enlightenment and the Path

Why would we want to teach about the spiritual dimensions of art and life?
To gain broader understanding of others and their values
Can appeal to a wide range of students no matter what their beliefs are
Religion is the predominant theme in most of art and art history
Spirit is a strong theme in contemporary art
May lead to personal growth, self-awareness, social and emotional learning

1. Using your own images, drawing, photographs, construct a  small mandala representing the idea of dharma, a path of enlightenment, a quest or question, a sacred space.  Use the fundamental structure of the mandala,

What is enlightenment? What are the characteristics of enlightenment?  The characteristics of an enlightened person? Peaceful, loving, understanding
Knowledge
Self Aware
Control
Willing to try, a beginners mind
Not overburdened with worries
Power, but not the dominating kind
Open minded-humble, meek
Walks with God
Willing to learn from other people (meek)
Willing to give space: to be smaller
fully present, but willing to be absent
Aware of little moments, small steps, small things
A guide, knows the way (like a Bodhisattva: a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings. “A being set upon enlightenment,” “One whose essence is perfect knowledge,” or “A being whose essence is enlightenment.”
Perfect, but like Kintsugi, Japanese art of fixing broken pottery. Rather than rejoin ceramic pieces with a camouflaged adhesive, the Kintsugi technique employs a special tree sap lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The subsequent Kintsugi approach of emphasising rather than hiding damage illustrates a key difference between eastern and western philosophy. Kintsugi beautifies the breakage and treats it as an important part of the object’s history, and the broken pot not as something to discard, but as something more precious than it was before.
A confidant, mentor,
Perfect, but still growing, can learn from others
